After years of teaching Psychology, I now make bespoke mosaics and run mosaic workshops, ranging from Beginner to Advanced. I’m lucky enough to work from home, down here in beautiful Cornwall where the sun is always shining and it never rains. Hmm, oh well, maybe it does rain sometimes…
I create bespoke mosaics using traditional materials such as marble and stone, but I do also use stained glass. The effects are very different so when making mosaics, it’s important to think about how you want the end result to look. I prefer up-cycling materials rather than buying new, so broken china and pottery is always put to good use.
Behind me on the photo (below) is a large (65 x 30cm) mosaic I finished a few months ago, based on The Beatles’ Abbey Road album cover. I used stained glass and mixed media and, as I didn’t want my mosaic to be just a straightforward copy, I’ve added a few little visual nods to some Beatles’ songs. Overall, I’m pleased with the way it came out, especially as I wasn’t sure how much detail to add to the faces. In the end, I thought the image was iconic enough as it stands.
